In the 1960's, American spy novelist Ian Fleming was struggling to find a workable plan for defeating Russia. His novel "The Man from U.N.C.L.E." became a breakthrough success and helped launch a popular franchise of spy movies, TV shows, and spin-offs for over 50 years. Set against the backdrop of Cold War Western Europe, "The Man from U.N.C.L.E." introduced some remarkable new words into daily parlance: 'goon,' 'spade,' 'bargain basement,' and 'counterfeit. ’ The world of the 1960's was far different from today's world, and though it's easy to see the show in hindsight, Fleming did not write "The Man from U.N.C.L.E." with any special political agenda in mind. The success of the TV show led 20th Century Fox to produce a theatrical film based on "The Man from U.N.C.L.E.", which was released in August 1965, two years after the TV series premiered and earned an Academy Award nomination for Best Picture (losing to "A Man for All Seasons"). "The Man from U.N.C.L.E." starred Robert Vaughn as Napoleon Solo, a top agent for the United Network Command for Law and Enforcement (U.N.C.L.E.), and David McCallum as Illya Kuryakin, an agent for the rival network Technological Hierarchy for the Removal of Undesirables and the Subjugation of Humanity (T.H.R.U.S .H.). Together, they battled the criminal organization L.I.G.O. and its mysterious leader, Aristotle Voltaire (Walter Pidgeon). To date, the only official sequel in this film franchise is "The Return of the Man from U.N.C.L.E." in which Kuryakin and Solo head to Egypt to rescue Solo's daughter Illya from a cult led by Professor Moriarty (Christopher Walken). In the 1990's, a TV revival of The Man from U.N.C.L.E. was launched and The Countess (Joanna Pettet) returns in an episode, "The Dream Machine," where she helps Napoleon Solo and Illya Kuryakin rescue Alexander Waverly (Leo G. Carroll) from her husband, Spencer Smythe (Mark Lenard). In this particular episode, the tone is rather more adult than one might expect for a family-friendly TV show which would have been up against popular shows like "The X-Files". cfa1e77820
