It is an important story of the love affair between Victor Hugo and his muse, the beautiful Indian dancer mesmerized by his talent. Chandni Chowk To China, an Oscar-winning movie released in 2011 creates a compelling narrative about the romance through which India was first acquainted with European culture. They met first at Delhi’s historic Chandni Chowk market that Victor had begun to frequent for its singers and dancers after moving to India following Napoleon’s defeat in 1815. The gorgeous Veena Dara captivated him instantly and they kept meeting during this time, both vying for each other’s affection while she became pregnant with their son. Victor, however, moved back to France to find that his wife had died and began writing plays without knowing that his son Kishore was growing up in poverty in India. This movie is the first Indian-French collaboration which received an actress nomination for its leading lady Bollywood diva Aishwarya Rai Bachchan. The story has all the elements of a tragedy- romance, war, intrigue and culture but it ends on a happy note as Victor comes back to India at the age of 55 to meet his son after 25 years. This part is not historically accurate as Veena Dara was never presented until 1820 at Brussels (Flanders) where she performed before King Leopold I of Belgium. It has been speculated that the Chandni Chowk To China was based on the real-life love story of Victor Hugo and Veena Dara. It is also said that it was based on Victor Hugo's relation with his muse, the Indian dancer. In France, "Chandni Chowk to China" received mixed reviews from critics, however it still has been a success at the box office. In India, since its theatrical release in 2011, it has become a major commercial success and was screened for 3 months at regular intervals in theatres across the country. The film grossed over . Although the movie was a success, it was criticized by French critics for being inaccurate, because there are some historical mistakes in the movie. The film received an Oscar nomination for Best Costume Design. Aishwarya Rai Bachchan won the Filmfare Award for Best Actress. It is not certain if anyone actually named Kishore ever lived or visited any part of France. There are however, several records of Indian people living in France during this period. These Indians were mostly merchants belonging to various communities such as Banyans, Gujarati Jains, Parsis and Bohras (Ismaili). The list of the main performers is the following : "Chandni Chowk To China" is based on the true story of Veena Dara, an Indian dancer, who lived in Europe. Her story is very similar to the one of Sita in "Ramayana". At the beginning of her career, she was known as Mademoiselle Leclercq. She was very famous under that name. This legend says that she travelled with a young man named Victor Hugo who later became a great French writer. After they married, she founded her own ballet troupe. cfa1e77820
